Ever since the recent report on 60 Minutes in January 2009 featured the anti aging resveratrol, there has been a lot of attantion on the ‘red wine pill.’

What did the report say?

The report talked about this red wine supplement and mentioned some pretty interesting facts about resveratrol, as well as how interest in this ‘anti aging’ ingredient came about.

If you’re interested in anti aging, then have a look at this report.

Resveratrol in the news includes other news programs .

But this was one of the longer and more informative ones.

Let’s have a look at what was said in the resveratrol 60 Minutes program:

Here’s the 60 Minutes video on resveratrol:

Here’s a summary of the 60 Minutes program:

Dr. Westphal says we all may soon be taking a drug that just might beat the clock.

In terms of longevity as well as leading healthier lives:

“Our goal is to prevent and forestall many of the diseases that strike us as we reach 50, 60, and 70. All with one pill.”~1

The interest in resveratrol began with the French paradox, where “despite a high fat diet and high consumption of wine - had a remarkably low incidence of heart disease, compared with Americans.” ~1

Then the discovery of resveratrol in red wine caused scientists to believe that it may explain the Franch paradox and in higher doses may have anti aging benefits as well.

Dr. Westphal and David Sinclair, now key researchers in resveratrol met in 2003, which led them to make the connection between resveratrol and its effect on the anti aging gene.

Sinclair, from Harvard who showed Westphal that lifespan can be increased in yeast with the activation of certain genes. In humans and other animals, it is via the Sirtuin or Sirt-1 gene.

Convinced that something in nature could activate this anti aging gene, Sinclair tested thousands of compounds.

He found a hit: it was that resveratrol.

And red wine was rich in this resveratrol compound, which comes from the grape skin expecially.

Is there another way to activate this gene?

At the time, it was also known that calorie restriction turns the gene on, whereas overeating turns it off.

In studies in monkeys on calorie restriction for example, it was found that the “slimmer monkeys” did better.

“And the chunky monkeys? Many have diabetes, and a significantly higher number have cancer and heart disease.” ~1

There is even a CRS, a calorie restriction society in the US, devoted to living a calorie restriction lifetyle.

The next step in the puzzle was that resveratrol was found to have the effect of calorie restriction on mice studies by Sinclair in his now famous Harvard Medical School study on resveratrol.

The mice were protected from the biochemical and physical changes of obesity and a high calorie diet. The group with resveratrol performed better physically, had improved longevity, as well as healthy, instead of aged organs as found in their organ analyses on heart and liver.

“We have a pill that can mimic many of the effects of calorie restriction or exercise,” Westphal says. ~1

Progressing onto human studies of resveratrol, Sinclair looked at the effectiveness of resveratrol on reducing blood sugar levels in diabetes.

And the results?

“The results were impressive: it significantly lowered glucose and insulin levels, without the patients changing their diet or taking any other drugs.” ~1

It seems as if resveratrol holds a lot of promise in many areas of health.

Want your free trial of resveratrol?

Get Your Resveratrol Free Trial Here

Sinclair’s conclusion was:

“We’re talking about is potentially making a 90-year-old as healthy as a 60-year-old. A 90-year-old can play tennis, and see their great grandkids graduate from college. People will live active, healthy lives and then die quietly in their sleep. And that’s really the aim here with these medicines,” he says. ~1

Now, a more potent version of resveratrol is in the process of being developed for the purpose of testing of resveratrol in cancer patients.

In the meantime, natural resveratrol is available as supplements, and is already very popular anti aging supplement.

Resveratrol has beenused by the Japanese as a traditional healing and health promoting supplement, and now scientific process is coming into the story with human trials.

We’re bound to hear more about resveratrol.

It’s now been featured on a variety of programs and medical journals, and many physicians as well as non physicians are taking this ‘anti aging’ supplement.

If you’re interested in anti aging, then you would have heard of resveratrol.

Resveratrol has been featured on 60 Minutes, Oprah, ABC News, Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

Why?

It’s because of the many benefits of resveratrol which are being discovered.

Want the best resveratrol supplements? Then see my review here:

Resveratrol Supplements Review

What are they? The benefits of resveratrol are many, and include:

1. The reported effects of resveratrol from people

These include:

1. Improved energy levels

2. Improved mental clarity

3. Better physical senses

4. Weight control and fat loss

5. Better, younger looking skin

6. Improved conditions associated with inflammation

7. Better physical endurance and wellbeing overall

Many people and physicians have resveratrol for its long term anti aging effects but have realised the noticeable effects as well.

As a potent antioxidant, it is perhaps not surprising that people notice these more obvious health benefits of resveratrol.

You can read more about my experience with resveratrol here in my review of resveratrol benefits and what I found.

Benefits Of Resveratrol: My Personal Experience

You can read all about what I found with resveratrol to be the noticeable benefits on my health and wellbeing.

You can also read a discussion there on other people’s experiences with resveratrol as well!

2. The health benefits of resveratrol according to medical research

There are a variety of medical research looking at this question of resveratrol health benefits.

The studies include:

1. The French Paradox

Scientists have been looking for the explanation for the French Paradox, that is, why the French have a low incidence of heart disease despite a high fat diet.

Now, resveratrol in red wine is believed to be the explanation that they have been looking for.

It has been found by Dr David Sinclair that resveratrol activates the ‘anti aging’ gene or Sirtuin (SIRT1) gene, and the effects of these are now believed to be wide ranging and include cardioprotection.

2. Longevity studies in mice by Dr Simclair

These studies published in 2006 created quite a stir. It was found that resveratrol has an effect on longevity in mice with a reduced risk of death of 31%.

A group given a high calorie diet and resveratrol, was compared to a group given the high caloric diet alone, and a group given a standard diet.

The mice with resveratrol had the increased longevity as well as being protected from the metabolic pathways associated with a high calorie diet, in that their insulin sensitivity was preserved, and they had lower insulin, glucose and IGF-1 levels.

This reflected that of the healthy mice with the standard diet, instead of elevated levels in the obese mice with the high calorie diet.

As well, under microscopy, it was found that the organs of the resveratrol mice were healthy, like the mice withthe standard diet, instead of diseased, like the high calorie group. ~1

3. Other research studies (there are many)

Many more research studies have found these effects of resveratrol:

1. Antioxidant

2. Anti inflammatory

3. Anti cancer and anti tumor, including research on the effect of breast, prostate and other cancer cells, as well as its effect on inhibition of all stages of cancer from initiation, to promotion to progression. ~2,3,4

4. Cardioprotective. There have been studies looking at the effect of resveratrol on protecting the heart both in health and after myocardial infarction and heart attack. ~5

5. Anti aging

6. Anti Alzheimers. There are studies are looking at the role of resveratrol in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s. ~6

7. Weight loss. There have been studies that have found a direct effect of resveratorl on fat cells, fat storage and its role in reducing overweightness as well as the problems associated with obesity. ~7

So as you can see, there are many research resveratrol benefits.

Want to try resveratrol as a free trial?

Future benefits of resveratrol?

At the moment, human trials are underway on the effect of resveratrol in diabetes and cancer patients.

No doubt we will hear more about the health benefits of red wine pill or resveratrol.

It’s interesting to note that many physicians as well as regular people are now taking resveratrol for anti aging.

There are many potential benefits and more are yet to be found.

You don’t have to drink 100-1000 bottles of red wine a day to get the benefits of this ingredient.

You can now get it in pill form as a resveratrol supplement.

Since resveratrol is a relatively new supplement, there may be side effects that we don’t know about yet, to do with resveratrol.

So far, after taking resveratrol, I have not noticed side effects yet.

I have noticed several resveratrol benefits which you can find in my earlier post. But this is not to say that there can be side effects of resveratrol that may occur.

So put your posts here of any resveatrol side effects that you have experienced.

If you had benefits as well as side effects, then let us know.

And take into account the dose as well.

Some studies have found that resveratrol was well tolerated in large doses, eg 2.5 grams to 5 grams in single dose. ~1

Another study, this time by Sinclair, was the first human trial of a drug which mimics the effect of resveratrol, on type 2 diabetes patients.

In this study, a third or participants took a 2.5 g dose, another third took a 5 g dose, with a third taking a placebo.

The results?

“Both doses were found to be safe and well tolerated and levels of the drug remained consistent in the blood over the 28-day period, the company said. But the drug also improved glucose tolerance in an oral test and showed a trend toward lowering glucose levels in the blood.” ~2

It’s interesting to note that resveratrol from Japanese knotweed (the most potent source of resveratrol) has been taken by the Chinese and Japanese for decades for its anti aging and healing benefits.

And it was only recently in Western culture, with the discovery of the resveratrol in red wine that this compound has been gaining a lot of attention.

Apparently, half the people in the labs of Dr Sinclair are taking resveratrol.

You can read more about the research and studies on resveratrol in my other post, and the benefits these studies have shown.

And remember that individual responses may vary.

So let us know and share your experiences.

If you’re interested in anti aging, then you would know about resveratrol.

It has been on the news, and is considered the latest anti aging supplement available.

But what are the resveratrol benefits?

Here’s my personal experience with resveratrol and what I’ve found to be the benefits. Why did I try resveratrol in the first place?

Well, I keep relatively healthy and feel pretty good. I do weight training 5 days a week to gain muscle and lose fat, eat good food, take multivitamins and enjoy doing so.

So I wanted to take resveratrol for its potential health benefits for ‘healthy aging’ and according to research studies had its various good effects.

You can see a list of the benefits of resveratrol from people’s experiences as well as from medical research here.

So I was doing it for these health effects and was not necessarily expecting any changes that I could feel.

In other words, according to preliminary studies, resveratrol could be good for me so that’s why I tried it out to see.

What did I find?Well, the changes I felt did surprise me.

I’ll detail the changes and the time frame for them:

1. I had more energy first thing in the morning.

Normally, I would wake up and only during a training session at the gym first thing in the morning, when I would feel more like 100% again.

But within the first week of resveratrol (I began without changing my diet or exercise routine at all to keep things consistent), I noticed that my mind and energy level was already up and running normally from the time I woke up.

2. My physical performance at the gym improved.

I noticed that when I worked out I could feel my muscles more and perform better.

I workout with a demanding routine and I can feel that my body seems to be ‘working better’.

The time frame for this was during the 2nd week.

3. My skin cleared up.

This occured after the first 3-4 days. Now this was the change that surprised me the most.

For the past 17 years I have had adult acne, and I would always had 5-6 acne lesions on my skin at any one time. The only time when it went away was when I took Roaccutane 7 years ago (I had 2 courses and hit the maximum total dose and had to stop). But my skin just cleared and I have not had any blemishes with my skin since. The 5-6 a day acne lesions left, but also my skin improved in other ways. The color in my cheeks returned, and my skin texture and appearance also became younger looking and just looked ‘healthier’.

I had people commenting that my skin just looks ‘good’.

I would have never expected this from resveratrol, but I was glad of this visible change that I would have ‘evidence’ that something was working in my body.

4. Losing fat became easier.

I have noticed that my fat around my face area, which I find I struggle to lose at times, became much easier to keep off.

I do work out hard, but often find that fat accumulates around my face and abdominal area easier thatn I would like, and to be especially sensitive to carbs in my diet or just by eating slightly more calories than I could handle.

But now I saw that I would exercise and keep fat levels down, instead of exercise and ’struggle to lose fat’.

And looking trimmer around the face and under the chin, does help even more in making me look younger.

This effect was after 2 weeks of starting the resveratrol supplements.

5. My mental performance was more consistent throughout the day.

Because of my consistent exercise I would normally have pretty good mental performance. And there were times when I would lag mentally in the afternoon or evening.

But after being on resveratrol for that first week, I found that I had more consistent mental clarity over any time of the day. If I wanted or needed to do work at the computer in the evening my mind and energy levels would be able to cope and I would suddenly realise that I was already doing it instead of trying to ‘refresh’ myself to do it.

I noticed a similar effect when I started multivitamins years ago, but this brings it up ‘another notch’ for me.

So these are my impressions with taking resveratrol.

Some changes I was totally surprised at, such as the skin and even better mental performance, as well as physical performance.

I did it mainly to get the benefits of the French paradox for heart health and potential anti aging benefits.

But the noticeable mental and physical changes I experienced were a pleasant and tangible benefit that I could feel.

So let me know what your experiences are with resveratrol.

Did you find any benefits?

Why did you try out the resveratrol in the first place?

Let us know.

And I’ll keep you updated as well with new posts.

There has been much interest in resveratrol since it’s appearance on 60 Minutes, with talk of its many potential benefits.

But what is the research that’s going on with resveratrol?

What are the scientific studies looking at, when it comes to this ‘red wine supplement’?

Well, let’s have a look:Dr David Sinclair - Harvard Medical School

The first study to be aware of is the famous one by Dr David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School, where the benefits of resveratrol on mice were studied.

In 2006, his publication of his findings got media attention the world over.

His study showed that:

“After six months, resveratrol essentially prevented most of the negative effects of the high calorie diet in mice,” said Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., the study’s other co-senior investigator ~1

In mice who had the resveratol, there were benefits seen that reflected a protection against the negative effects of a high calorie diet and obesity.

These benefits including decreased blood sugar levels, improved insulin sensitivity, improved health of heart and liver tissues, better physical performance and improved longevity.

This has led Sinclair to pursue further studies on resveratrol on diabetes and its ability to improve insulin sensitivity, and control blood glucose levels.

And in terms of better performance in the mice with resveratrol:

“The mice on resveratrol have not been just living longer,” says Sinclair. “They are also living more active, better lives. Their motor skills actually show improvement as they grow older.”

This study caused many sections of the media and the health profession to pay attention to the potential benefits of resveratrol and red wine, and the variety of benefits seen in this study triggered a lot of research into resveratrol.

In Vitro And In Vivo Studies: Anti Cancer Effects

There has been a number of in vitro and in vivo studies on the effect of resveratrol on cancer cells. The anti tumor effect may be on various steps of the cancer process, not just one. The latest findings indicate that resveratrol may have anti cancer and anti tumor effects in these cell studies, in a variety of types of tumors.

“The anticancer property of resveratrol has been supported by its ability to inhibit proliferation of a wide variety of human tumor cells in vitro.” ~2

“In vivo, resveratrol blocks the multistep process of carcinogenesis at various stages: it blocks carcinogen activation by inhibiting aryl hydrocarbon-induced CYP1A1 expression and activity, and suppresses tumor initiation, promotion and progression.

Besides chemopreventive effects, resveratrol appears to exhibit therapeutic effects against cancer. Limited data in humans have revealed that resveratrol is pharmacologically quite safe. Currently, structural analogues of resveratrol with improved bioavailability are being pursued as potential therapeutic agents for cancer.” ~3

Of course, human studies are required before conclusions can be made on the effectiveness of resveratrol in humans, but these in vitro and in vivo studies are prompting more studies to be done.

Cardioprotection

A recent research article looked at the role of resveratrol in cardioprotection or protection of the hearth in health and disease, such as the protection against reperfusion injury, which is the injury that occurs to the heart muscle after a heart attack when blood flow returns to the muscle.

The role of resveratrol in reducing cholesterol and blood sugar levels were also reviewed:

“We have recently reported the angiogenic, antihypercholesterolemic, and antidiabetic effects of resveratrol and the mechanisms involved in reduced ventricular remodeling and increased cardiac functions. We have also shown different strategic target molecules involved in resveratrol-mediated cardioprotection.”

And this study “discusses the potential effect of resveratrol and the mechanisms involved in resveratrol-mediated cardioprotection during myocardial infarction, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes rendering its beneficial effects during health and disease.” ~4

We’ll put up more highlights of research and resveratrol studies as they become published.

Resveratrol And Diabetes

A recent very promising study looked at the effect of resveratrol on type 2 diabetes.

This study was headed by David Sinclair and represented the first human trial of a drug which mimics the effect of resveratrol.

A thrid of patients were given a 2.5g dose of the drug, another third given a 5g dose and a third taking a placebo.

And the study results?

It found that:

“Both doses were found to be safe and well tolerated and levels of the drug remained consistent in the blood over the 28-day period, the company said. But the drug also improved glucose tolerance in an oral test and showed a trend toward lowering glucose levels in the blood.” ~5

This is very promising as it shows good tolerance to the drug at high doses as well as effectiveness in improving glucose tolerance in diabetes.

If you’re interested in anti aging, then you would have heard about resveratrol.

It’s been on Oprah and on 60 Minutes, and has been called a breakthrough in anti aging, and is a powerful antioxidant.

So what is resveratrol exactly?

Well, let’s have a look at resveratrol, its benefits and how you can get resveratrol into your diet.Resveratrol is a phytochemical, or plant based ingredient, which comes from a variety of plants, including red grapes and red wine.

Resveratrol is also found in Japanese knotweed plant, which has traditionally been used by the Japanese for its healing and anti aging properties.

It was first broguht into attention when it was found that red wine contained resveratrol, and was proposed to be an explanation for the French paradox.

The French paradox is the fact that the French have a low incidence of heart or coronary disease despite a high fat diet.

However, their high intake of red wine, which contains resveratrol, may explain this paradox.

Then in 2006 when a study in Harvard Medical School found that resveratrol caused a variety of anti aging benefits and improved longevity in mice studies, was the real breakthrough with resveratrol.

The benefits discovered included the fact that the studies showed that resveratrol protected against the negative effects of obesity and a high calorie diet.

There was also improved health of heart and liver organs as well as improved physical performance.

It also found that there was an effect on longevity, with a 31% reduction in risk of death.~1

It was this improved health and lomgevity that surprised even scientists.

Click Here To Get Your Resveratrol Free Trial

Now, resveratrol has been studied for its:

1. antioxidant

2. anti inflammatory

3. anti cancer

4. anti platelet

5. cardioprotective

6. anti viral

7. anti aging effects ~1,2,3

Recent attention has been on the effects of resveratrol in fighting cancer cells, and in protecting the heart from damage in situations of health as well as myocardial infarction. ~4

And then the recent attention on 60 Minutes, and then on Oprah with Dr Oz, has discussed resveratrol as an anti aging breakthrough.

It was discussed that this supplement may improve longevity, as well as bring health to aging, known as ‘healthy aging’.

People who now take rsveratrol report a variety of benefits on health and wellbeing.

So keep your eye out on what’s new with resveratrol in this blog.
