If you’re interested in anti aging, then you would have heard about resveratrol.
It’s been on Oprah and on 60 Minutes, and has been called a breakthrough in anti aging, and is a powerful antioxidant.
So what is resveratrol exactly?
Well, let’s have a look at resveratrol, its benefits and how you can get resveratrol into your diet.Resveratrol is a phytochemical, or plant based ingredient, which comes from a variety of plants, including red grapes and red wine.
Resveratrol is also found in Japanese knotweed plant, which has traditionally been used by the Japanese for its healing and anti aging properties.
It was first broguht into attention when it was found that red wine contained resveratrol, and was proposed to be an explanation for the French paradox.
The French paradox is the fact that the French have a low incidence of heart or coronary disease despite a high fat diet.
However, their high intake of red wine, which contains resveratrol, may explain this paradox.
Then in 2006 when a study in Harvard Medical School found that resveratrol caused a variety of anti aging benefits and improved longevity in mice studies, was the real breakthrough with resveratrol.
The benefits discovered included the fact that the studies showed that resveratrol protected against the negative effects of obesity and a high calorie diet.
There was also improved health of heart and liver organs as well as improved physical performance.
It also found that there was an effect on longevity, with a 31% reduction in risk of death.~1
It was this improved health and lomgevity that surprised even scientists.
