What Is Resveratrol? When it comes to anti aging, resveratrol has become a well known antioxidant and nutrient, virtually overnight. But what is Resveratrol? And what are its benefits? It was then thought that resveratrol could explain the French paradox. In a famous study released in 2006 by the Harvard Medical School, in research headed by Dr David Sinclair, it was found that this molecule resveratrol, found in red grapes, was shown to: 1. Improve longevity of obese mice by 31% (1) 2. Reverse the gene changes that occur with obesity and mice on high calorie diets, such as diabetes, heart disease and other diseases associated with obesity. He continues, the "benefits we saw in the obese mice treated with resveratrol, such as increased insulin sensitivity, decreased glucose levels, healthier heart and liver tissues, are positive clinical indicators and may mean we can stave off in humans age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, but only time and more research will tell," says Sinclair. 3. Better health in aging (healthy aging), and quality of life. "The mice on resveratrol have not been just living longer," says Sinclair. "They are also living more active, better lives. Their motor skills actually show improvement as they grow older." So the ability of resveratrol to affect longevity, health and wellbeing, and thus has been called one of the most significant breakthroughs in anti aging in the last 10 years. There have been many studies on resveratrol, its potent ability to neutralise free radicals, and its anti tumour effects on cancer cells. These studies are finding out more about what is resveratrol and its many anti aging benefits. Currently, Sinclair is heading a human phase 1b trial of the benefits of resveratrol on diabetes, under the company Sirtris. So how does resveratrol work? Prior to the discovery or SIRT-1, the gene which caused anti aging effects in lower organisms such as yeasts, was found and was called Sir-2. The human version is called SIRT-1.It is believed that resveratrol activates the gene known as SIRT-1, which activates a series of changes in cells that result in anti aging, longevity and improved health. Resveratrol in other studies include: 1) In vitro (laboratory) studies have shown anti cancer effects on a variety of cancers. 2) In animal studies, increased life span and better athletic performance was shown, as was the prevention of cancers in animal studies. 3) In humans, studies on cancer such as colon cancer and melanoma are underway. 4) A stage 1b trial of the benefits of resveratrol on diabetes is underway. 5) Research is occuring in the benefits of resveratrol in Alzheimers disease. Being a natural antioxidant and vitamin, the resveratrol supplement has gained large popularity as it is a natural way to boost our ability to resist oxidative stress which is believed to be a major factor which affects our risk of premature aging, and degenerative disease. Resveratrol from red grapes has become one of the new 'superfoods' or 'functional foods' alongside acai, and other healthy antioxidant rich foods which have health benefits on the body. In particular, trans-resveratrol is the form of resveratrol that is the most studied and which has been reported to have these beenficial effects. Resveratrol FAQ: 1. Is resveratrol the same as grape seed extract? No, grape seed extract which has a high concentration of proanthocyanidins is from grape seed, a slightly different source than resveratrol which is from grape skin and fruit. 2. Is there an ideal dose for resveratrol? This is still to be agreed upon, as is the case for most natural nutrients. All supplements should contain instructions on the label to indicate the recommended dose for the potency and dosage of the particular supplement. 3. Can I get the same benefits from drinking red wine? You can get some resveratrol from drinking red wine, but the amount may depend on the source and quality of the wine and you may need a large quantity of red wine to get the desired effects. Some people also, have negative effects from alcohol such as mood changes, lethargy or weight gain and prefer to have non alcoholic sources of this natural antioxidant. So resveratrol is a natural antioxidant that has shown great promise, and has "been shown to possess antioxidative, anticarcinogenic, and antitumor properties." (2) As a nutritional supplement, it may be one fo the most important ones for longevity and anti aging. Want to buy resveratrol supplements?
